  Please note that the Weirton area was in the West Augusta District before it became Ohio County, Virginia.
It was in Ohio County, Virginia until 1797, when it became Brooke County, Virginia.
Hancock County, Virginia was created  in 1848. On June 20, 1863, West Virginia became a state,
and the area became Hancock County, West Virginia. The border between Brooke and
Hancock Counties lies within the Weirton city limits
